Garden Arbor Bench Covers: Measure Arches, Trellises, Seats, and Feet

A garden arbor bench combines a seat with tall side frames, lattice panels, an arch or small roof, and sometimes planters or climbing plants. Its height and open structure make it very different from a standard bench. A custom garden arbor bench cover should follow the fixed frame while staying clear of living growth, anchors, and drainage around the base.
Before measuring, confirm the structure is sound and suitable for covering. Remove loose cushions, décor, tools, and detached planters, then let wood, metal, and paving dry. Trim or gently redirect plants according to their care needs; never seal wet foliage or load a fragile trellis with fabric tension.

Define What Belongs Inside the Cover
List the fixed arch, posts, trellis panels, seat, back, roof slats, feet, and permitted attached planters. Exclude changing vines, hanging baskets, lights, and loose ornaments. Photograph the bare structure from the front, rear, both sides, and above if it is safe to do so.
Measure the Full Arbor Envelope
Use How to Measure to record maximum width, depth, and height at rigid points. Include finials, roof overhangs, post caps, side rails, and the deepest seat projection. Measure at the top, middle, and base because an arbor can flare or taper.
Capture the Arch or Roof Geometry
Record spring-line height where the arch begins, peak height, inside and outside width, roof depth, and any ridge or eave projection. For a curved top, add checkpoints from the centerline to several heights. Do not estimate the arch by measuring only its surface length.
Map Trellis Panels and Open Side Frames
Measure the outside limits of lattice or slatted sides, their thickness, and any decorative points. Note damaged edges before covering. The fabric should span the exterior frame without being pulled through openings, woven into lattice, or used to support plants that have grown beyond the measured structure.
Measure the Bench Within the Arbor
Capture seat width, depth, and height, plus back angle, arm projections, apron, and any storage lid. The bench may project beyond the posts at the front or sides. Document these lower high points so shaped panels can transition from the tall arbor to the seating section without loose pockets.
Record Feet, Anchors, and Ground Conditions
Measure post spacing, foot plates, stakes, bolts, leveling pads, and the lowest rigid edge. Note gravel, soil, deck gaps, or sloped paving. Keep the hem off wet ground and clear of drainage. Do not cover structural anchors that require inspection or obstruct a nearby path or gate.
Choose Fabric for a Tall Open Structure
Compare UV exposure, water behavior, flexibility, abrasion performance, and finished weight on Our Fabrics. Browse Custom Covers. A tall arbor catches wind, so controlled handling and strong orientation references are important during installation and removal.
Plan for Plants and Seasonal Growth
Agree on a plant-free clearance zone around the stored arbor. Vines and branches can change dimensions, hold moisture, and abrade the cover. Do not cut living growth solely to match an old measurement; recheck the frame and site before each storage season, following appropriate horticultural guidance.
Install From the Peak Downward
Use two people when the structure’s height or cover weight requires it. Mark the front and peak, lift without climbing on the bench, and lower both sides evenly. Keep closures on strong stationary frame areas, away from lattice openings, thorns, irrigation tubing, lights, and sharp decorative points.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can climbing plants stay beneath the cover?
Keep living growth outside the measured cover and follow the plant’s care needs; damp foliage can change fit and hold moisture.
Should I measure the arch along its curve?
Use peak height, spring-line height, widths, depth, and curve checkpoints rather than relying only on surface length.
Can I stand on the bench to install a tall cover?
Use a safe installation method and appropriate assistance; do not use the bench as an improvised ladder.
