Select One Approved Storage Orientation
Decide whether the beam remains horizontal or locks vertically between uses. Record every latch, pin, stand, and support required by the manufacturer for that position. A pattern made around the horizontal beam will not safely fit a vertical configuration, and an oversized compromise can catch wind or snag controls. If the machine alternates between a daily-use setup and an off-season setup, separate covers may be more reliable than one loose enclosure.
Measure the Beam From Hitch to Work End
Record overall length from the farthest hitch component to the opposite end of the beam or work table. Measure beam width, height, and ground clearance at several points. Map the Cylinder, Wedge, and Control Zone
Measure the cylinder housing, rod guard, wedge assembly, control valve, lever, hoses, filters, and protective brackets in the secured storage state. Do not stretch fabric directly across the control lever or hydraulic fittings. Note sharp corners that need a reinforced panel or separate padding. Close photographs should show the clearance around moving parts so closures and seams can be kept away from places where they could be caught after removal.
Record the Engine and Hydraulic Reservoir Separately
Measure maximum engine width, engine height, fuel tank, muffler guard, air cleaner, starter housing, hydraulic tank, cap, and hose routing. Identify which surfaces become hot and follow the engine manufacturer’s required cooling time before covering. Never use fabric to suppress fuel odor, conceal a leak, or replace ventilation and maintenance. The machine must be clean, cool, dry, and inspected before the cover is fitted.
Include Tires, Fenders, Axle, and Ground Spread
Measure outside tire-to-tire width, tire diameter, fender width, and the lowest protected point. Record whether the tires turn, whether a caster or jack wheel stays deployed, and whether the splitter sits on pavement, gravel, or soil. A hem that drags on the ground collects grit and moisture. Reachable straps near the axle can improve wind security, but they should not cross tires, brake parts, safety chains, or areas needed to move the machine.
Protect the Tow End Without Creating a Road Cover
A fitted pocket can protect a stored coupler and chains, but the cover must be completely removed before towing. Show the hitch lock, chains, wiring plug, jack, and any license-plate or lighting hardware. Decide whether chains stay mounted or hang on an approved holder. A bright removal tag at the tow end can support a pre-transport checklist, especially when several machines share a yard.
Plan Access for Inspection, Not Covered Operation
A flap may allow staff to read an asset number or inspect a protected control area during storage, but it must not imply that the splitter can be started or operated while covered. Keep closures obvious and away from the wedge, lever, and hydraulic components. Before use, remove the entire cover, move it outside the work zone, inspect the machine, and complete every manufacturer-required setup and safety check.
Choose Fabric and Fastening for the Storage Site
A roofed woodshed, open equipment yard, and transport trailer have different exposure. Inspect the Cover Through Seasonal Storage
Check the covered splitter after high wind, heavy rain, snow, yard work, and any time another machine has been moved nearby. Confirm the hem remains off the ground, straps have not shifted toward hoses or controls, and no water has collected along the beam. Remove the cover periodically to inspect for leaks, pests, corrosion, fuel odor, hydraulic residue, or damaged padding. Correct the equipment issue first, then clean and dry the cover before reinstalling it.
