How to Measure Patio Furniture for a Custom Cover

Patio furniture is often the heart of an outdoor space, but it is also one of the easiest categories to measure incorrectly. Chairs, sectionals, sofas, dining sets, ottomans, chaise lounges, and tables may look simple from a distance, but small details such as arms, back height, cushions, curved corners, and decorative edges can change the final cover fit.

Measure the Actual Outdoor Item

Start by placing the furniture in the position you want it covered. If cushions will stay on the furniture, measure with the cushions in place. If the item has arms, handles, wheels, table ledges, or raised edges, include those outer points in your measurements.

For most patio furniture, you will need width, depth, and height. Width is the widest left-to-right point. Depth is the deepest front-to-back point. Height is measured from the ground or base to the highest point that needs protection.

Use the Largest Outer Dimensions

When measuring a sofa, chair, or dining set, do not measure only the seat area. Measure the full outer size. Arms may extend beyond the seat. Chair backs may be higher than expected. Dining table edges may project beyond the legs. The cover needs to clear the full object, not just the central frame.

For rectangular or square furniture, record width, depth, and height. For round tables, fire tables, or circular seating elements, measure diameter straight across the widest point and total height from base to top.

Sectionals Need Extra Attention

L-shape and U-shape sectionals should be measured by section, not guessed as one basic rectangle. Record the left and right lengths, each depth, total height, and any asymmetrical direction. If one side is longer than the other, note which side is which when facing the furniture.

Do Not Forget Clearance and Practical Details

A cover should protect the furniture while remaining practical to install and remove. If you want the cover to reach the ground, measure to the ground. If you prefer a small clearance above the floor for airflow or easier handling, note that detail when ordering.

Also consider features such as vents, handles, zippers, drawcords, straps, or buckles. These details can make a larger patio furniture cover easier to use in daily life.
